How Many Glasses of Wine Are in a Bottle? |
For those of us who enjoy wine at any level, we are most familiar with a 750 ml, or 25-ounce bottle. This is considered the standard bottle and is the most widely used, but there are others. Some wine brands are also available in a large magnum bottle of 1.5 ml or roughly 50-ounce size, such as CK Mondavi Chardonnay 2018 available at Joe Canal's in Woodbridge, NJ. Another choice in size is a 3 ml, or about a 100-ounce bottle, referred to as a double magnum. And larger still is the large format, 5 ml, or 170-ounce bottle, or box, like California's Barefoot Pinot Noir. At the other end of the spectrum, you can purchase wine in a smaller, half-bottle containing 375 ml, or 12.5 ounces. Even smaller is the split bottle, which contains just 187.5 ml, or a bit more than six ounces. To purchase a wide variety of wine brands in these different bottle sizes, visit Joe Canal's in Woodbridge. Recommended Wine Serving SizesThe general serving size for a glass of wine is about five ounces, the recommended serving size by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This is not the serving size of a dessert wine, however, which is offered in a smaller glass and limited to about two ounces. How Many Glasses Should You Expect From a Standard Bottle of Wine? When you purchase a standard-size bottle of wine, you can expect it to accommodate five standard servings. That bottle size has a history. In the 1800s, the standard 750 ml bottle seemed most desired by British wine aficionados who enjoyed French wine. Why? This bottle size fits well into the British "imperial gallon" system. The British imperial gallon is 20 percent larger than the U.S. gallon, with the British version being recognized in many parts of the world including Ireland, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere. Through the years, the 750 ml bottle garnered popularity, becoming the dominating option around the globe. Magnums and Larger FormatsWhen you are ready to entertain, you should consider larger wine packaging. The magnum will serve twice that of a standard bottle, making it a great option for eight to 10 people. Some red wine aficionados also feel that red wines age better in a larger bottle, thus another reason to consider magnum sizing. A double magnum doubles your serving size, accommodating about 20 single servings. And when expecting an even larger crowd, your best option may be that of the larger format of 5 ml, such as is available for Almaden Chardonnay from California. While some wineries use bottles for larger format packaging, others utilize boxes for this size, which is another great option especially if you need to store for a bit before serving it. The Diminutive Half and Split BottlesIf you live alone or happen to be the only wine drinker in the house, the split bottle is a great choice for a single serving. While you can find some traditional wines in this size, split bottles are also typically used for champagne and sparkling wines. The half-bottle holds approximately two and a half servings and is a perfect bottle for a romantic dinner for two. It also is a good choice for a sampling of a new-to-you wine such as the Italian wine, Fattoria del Cerro – Vin Santo di Montepulciano, before purchasing a larger bottle.
