This is the first release of a new cuvée named after Billiot's first grandchild, and it spent some 7 months in barrique (mostly used)-the only wine in the house to see any wood whatsoever-it's all 1999 but the label won't say. I didn't taste oak at all, improbably enough, just a stunning thrust of Pinot Noir fruit, I mean schweet Pinot Noir fruit; full of mass and smoulder, a fine Champagne in the old school.
The NV Cuvee Julie shows a different facet of this producer's personality. Cuvee Julie is 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir from a single (but officially undeclared) vintage, in this case 2005. The wine tastes like white Burgundy with bubbles, as endless nuances of smoke, liqueur, ripe fruit and mint grow in the glass, conveying an impression of sublime refinement. This bottle was disgorged in February, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012.
disgorged February 10, 2008; a 50/50 blend of chardonnay and pinot noir) Bright gold with a fine, steady bead. Smoky orchard fruit and orange aromas are complemented by brown butter, toasted nut and leesy qualities, with sexy notes of vanilla bean, floral honey and minerals. Juicy and round, offering deep pear, citrus and marzipan flavors and excellent finishing lift and cut. Reminds me of a serious Meursault. The smoky note returns on the finish, which is impressively energetic and long. This release is made completely from 2005 juice.
